Table of Contents:

Causes

  • Reduce consumption of caffeine. If you drink tea, coffee, or any other beverage, ensure to rinse your mouth properly after drinking. It will help in preventing the staining of teeth.

  • Regulate your sugar intake. If you have a sweet tooth and like to eat too many sweets, then there is a high possibility that your teeth will turn yellow. Sooner or later, it will happen. So you should start regulating your sugar intake!

  • Not consuming a protein and calcium-rich diet can also lead to this problem. Protein and calcium deficiency are reflected in the teeth. It can lead to either discolouration or yellowing of teeth. So make sure that you have a protein and calcium-rich diet.

  • As we know, there is no substitute for brushing and flossing. Keeping your teeth clean by brushing twice (in the morning and before going to bed) and adding floss to your oral hygiene routine will keep your mouth healthy.

Other Reasons

1]. Age

  •   The upper layer of our teeth, which is white, is known as enamel.
  • The layer underneath the enamel is called yellow dentin.

  • With age, the enamel starts to erode, exposing the second layer. It can cause yellowing and discolouration of teeth as we age.

2]. Smoking and tobacco

  •  It should not be surprising that smoking and consuming tobacco is harmful. Not just for your teeth, but these two are the evil devils for your health.
  • So if you are in the habit of smoking or consuming tobacco, I urge you to quit as soon as you can.

  • This one step will make all the difference in your life.

 3]. Chemicals in Medicines

  •  Some medicines can lead to discolouration or yellowing of teeth.
  • It can be a sign that that particular medicine is not suited for you.

4]. Trauma

  •  Sometimes, trauma can affect oral health.
  • When a person goes through a trauma, the body releases a hormone that leads to the discolouration of teeth.

 5]. Grinding Teeth

  •  In sleep or habitually, grinding teeth can lead to cracks. Food particles tend to get deposited in these cracks leading to the yellowing of teeth or discoloration.
  • It is never too late to recognize and rectify your mistakes. There are four methods by which you can solve your dental issues and take appropriate measures for the future.

6]. Cosmetic Dentistry Treatment

  •  If you have issues more than just discolouration of teeth, you should visit a dentist as soon as possible.
  • A dentist will help you understand your problem better and suggest a suitable treatment. A dentist will educate you about the issue and suggest preventative measures.

  • DIY remedies seem convenient, but if used in the wrong way, they can lead to severe problems. So if you have any serious dental issues, see a dentist!

7]. Home Treatment

  •  If you visit the dentist with a problem of teeth discolouration or yellow teeth, and if that is the only one you are facing, your dentist will give you a home treatment kit.
  • This treatment kit consists of a denture and a paste. All you need do is fill the denture with the paste and wear it over your teeth, leave the denture overnight.

  • Brush your teeth in the morning to see the results. This method is somewhat like bleaching the teeth.

8]. Over the Counter Measures

  •  Teeth whitening kits are available in local pharmacies. You can go for this option, but remember, overuse of anything might lead to complications.
  • These treatments consist of certain bleaching elements which can corrode the enamel. So be alert if you go for this treatment.

DIY Remedies

I am sharing some remedies which are tried and tested by me. These remedies are effective and risk-free. You have to do ANY ONE of these remedies, not all. Pick anyone and do it religiously.

1]. Oil Pulling

Oil pulling might not be pleasant, but it is very effective. Not only for oral hygiene, but oil pulling is also effective in removing toxins from your body.

Ayurveda says that oil pulling should be done with sunflower oil or sesame oil. These are thick oils, and oil pulling can be tough using these oils.

Instead, use coconut oil. Coconut oil contains lauric acid that will kill streptococcus bacteria in your mouth.

All you need to do is take one tablespoon of coconut oil and start swooshing it in your mouth.

Circulate the oil properly to every corner of your mouth. You need to do this for 15 minutes. You will find it difficult initially, but eventually, you will get comfortable.

After spitting the oil, brush your teeth properly. Oil pulling can be done daily.

 2. Hydrogen Peroxide and Baking Soda

In this remedy, you need 1-3% hydrogen peroxide (it will be in liquid form) and baking soda.

Take one teaspoon (one part) of baking soda and two parts hydrogen peroxide. Make sure that hydrogen peroxide is not more than 1-3%.

Mix these two ingredients well with the help of your brush and brush your teeth with the paste formed.

You will see visible whitening results on the first attempt. Some people might sense sensitivity around gums, so this technique should not be used more than twice a week.

 3. Eat Water-Based Fruits and Vegetables

This might be the most delicious remedy.

You can eat strawberries, pineapples, cheese, broccoli, milk, and any possible vegetable or fruit that is crunchy and has a good amount of water content.

You need to make your teeth work! Prepare a gorgeous, crunchy salad and eat it. Make sure you lessen your caffeine intake with this remedy.

 4. Charcoal Powder

You can find charcoal powder in your nearby pharmacy.

If charcoal tablets are available instead of powder, you can crush them to make powder. Use this powder along with your toothpaste and brush your teeth.

You can also use your finger for this. Immediately after rinsing, you will notice that all the stains have vanished from your teeth.

5. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is an acid that kills germs and bacteria. Add one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to one cup of water.

You have to use it as a mouthwash. Rinse your mouth thoroughly and spit it out. If your teeth are sensitive, then avoid using this remedy.

Even if your mouth is healthy and the only problem you face is the stains, use this remedy only once a week. After all, apple cider vinegar is an acid and overusing it can be harmful.

Conclusion:

Go through all these DIY remedies thoroughly and then make a decision about which one suits you the best!

Taking care of your oral hygiene is as important as taking care of your health. So make the best use of these remedies and KEEP SMILING!
