How To Make Flax Seed Oil At Home?

Let me share a fact with you. If you leave cotton out in the open, a cocoon (cotton) gets woven around it.

The same thing happens with the flaxseeds. If you leave flaxseeds exposed to air, a gel-like layer forms around them.

It happens because both of these seeds belong to the same family! The clothes we wear during the summer season are made from cotton. It is a breathable fibre that helps to keep our bodies cool during summer.

Flaxseed oil is not easily available in the markets. The available ones might not be 100% reliable. The best option is to make the oil on your own.

In this article, we will learn a simple 5-step process of preparing flaxseed oil and gel that we can store for a month.

Did you know that 6000 years ago, Egyptians used flaxseed gel to preserve mummies? Preservation is one of the chief properties of flaxseeds.

The preservation technique by flaxseeds goes beyond preserving mummies. Flaxseeds can protect the health of your hair and skin.

Flaxseed oil is an oil prepared by roasting and grinding flaxseeds and then infusing your favourite oil into it.

These help nourish the hair and make the hair stronger, which prevents breakage. Flaxseeds can control the natural oil in hair without making the scalp dry.

Flaxseeds are beneficial if used topically, but many people are unaware of the staggering benefits of consuming flaxseeds!

  • Include roasted flaxseeds in your salads and any meal possible.

  • Dry roast flaxseeds turn them into powdered form and consume them directly.

  • You can dry roast flaxseeds along with other super seeds (chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, watermelon seeds, flax seeds, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, and soynuts).

Now let's get into the topical application of flaxseeds as an oil.

If you are sceptical about flaxseed application, take a patch test first (especially if you have sensitive skin). Once you gain confidence, dive right into the remedy.

How To Prepare Flaxseed Oil?

Follow this simple remedy step by step. But before that, you've to believe in it. Natural remedies work only when you believe in them.

STEP 1: Preparation of flaxseed oil

  • For this oil, you have to take one cup of flaxseeds in a pan and heat it. You can change the quantity as per your requirement.

  • Heat the seeds until you hear a cracking or popping sound (like popcorn!).

  • This sound indicates that the seeds are dehydrated and ready to use!

Let the seeds cool down.

STEP 2: Grinding

  • You've to double-grind the seeds. Take the seeds in a grinder and grind them till they turn into a powder.

  • Now, grind the powder further till it gets a caky consistency. The final product turns into a cake form because on grinding the powder, flaxseeds secret their oil.

  • So yes, flaxseed oil is in the form of cakes and is now ready for an infusion.

STEP 3: Infusion

The oils that you can use for infusion are - coconut oil, olive oil, almond oil, or argon oil.

  • Take the flaxseed cakes in a glass jar or a container. Add the oil of your choice (from the oils mentioned).

  • Close the lip properly and leave the jar outside for sun infusion (do not forget to bring it inside at night!).

  • It will take one week for this process to complete. After one week, your magical flaxseed oil will be ready for application.

STEP 4: Application

  • Detangle your hair nicely before starting the application.

  • Now start by massaging the roots of the hair with the oil and then move to the lengths.

  • Leave this oil overnight. If you are uncomfortable with washing your hair in the morning, you can apply the oil in the morning and wash your hair at night.

STEP: 4 - Flaxseeds gel

  • For preparing flaxseed gel, you need four cups of water and half a cup of flaxseeds.

  • Boil the seeds in water for 7 - 8 mins. Strain it, and your gel is ready.

  • Prepare the gel beforehand so that it has time to cool down.

  • You can store this gel for a month.

Apply this gel over your oiled hair approximately 45 minutes before washing your hair.

STEP 5: Wash your hair

  • Use your regular shampoo to wash your hair.

  • You will not require any conditioner as this process double-conditions the hair!

  • Use these oils and gel 2 - 3 times a week (before head wash) and see the magical powers of flaxseeds.

You can make this oil and store it for a month. You can store flaxseed oil for a month. You can store the gel without refrigeration for a week, but for a longer period, refrigeration is a must.
