Understanding your skin
Skin is a living, breathing ecosystem that mirrors your inner and outer well-being.
Your skin deserves the utmost care and attention from its resilient nature to its delicate nuances.
This largest organ is a complex network of cells, tissues, and glands working tirelessly to protect you from the elements while also allowing for vital functions like temperature regulation and sensation.
But let’s be honest, understanding skin takes time, patience, and willingness to listen.
Each skin type is unique, with its own set of needs and preferences. What works wonders for one person may not necessarily yield the same results for another.
Prioritising Skin Health
In our modern world, it often feels like there’s a solution for every problem, whether it’s a pill or a procedure. And in our busy chaotic life, it’s easy to get lost in the sea of products claiming to be natural while containing questionable chemicals.
So, how can we genuinely prioritise our skin health in a budget and environment-friendly way?
👉🏽 Start with hydration.
Various studies suggest that the root cause of the majority are skin health issues is poor hydration. Now, do one more thing.
👉🏽 Embrace your natural features.
Celebrate the natural qualities that define you. True beauty originates from authenticity and self-love. Before any skincare routine and makeup, you must love yourself.
Skincare isn’t merely about surface-level beauty conforming to unrealistic standards. It’s about nurturing and honouring the remarkable organ that is our skin. It’s about embracing our individuality and expressing ourselves authentically.
Now that you understand your skin and are determined to prioritise skin health, let’s look at some factors affecting skin health.
Factors Affecting Skin Health
Our skin is delicate and is often influenced by many factors some of which are out of our control. Let’s look at them.
Environmental Factors:
-
Sun Exposure: The sun’s UV rays can cause damage to our skin, leading to premature ageing, pigmentation issues, and even skin cancer.
-
Pollution: Air pollution, including pollutants like particulate matter and ozone, can penetrate the skin’s barrier, causing inflammation and oxidative stress.
-
Climate: Extreme temperatures and humidity levels can affect the skin’s moisture balance and exacerbate existing skin conditions.
Lifestyle Factors:
-
Diet: A balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants can promote skin health, while excessive consumption of processed foods and sugars may contribute to inflammation and acne.
-
Hydration: Adequate hydration is crucial for maintaining skin elasticity and preventing dryness and flakiness.
-
Sleep: Quality sleep allows the skin to repair and regenerate, contributing to a healthy complexion. Lack of sleep can lead to dullness, dark circles, and accelerated ageing.
Skincare Habits:
-
Cleansing Routine: Proper cleansing removes dirt, oil, and impurities from the skin’s surface, preventing clogged pores and breakouts.
-
Moisturising: Regular moisturisation helps maintain the skin’s hydration levels, preventing dryness and improving its overall texture.
-
Sun Protection: Applying sunscreen with a high SPF is essential to protect the skin from harmful UV rays and reduce the risk of sun damage and skin cancer.
-
Exfoliation: Gentle exfoliation removes dead skin cells, promoting cell turnover and enhancing the skin’s natural radiance.
Genetic Factors:
-
Skin Type: Genetic predispositions determine our skin type, whether it’s oily, dry, combination, or sensitive, influencing our susceptibility to certain skin conditions.
-
Ageing: Genetic factors also play a role in the ageing process, affecting collagen production, skin elasticity, and the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.
Hormonal Factors:
-
Hormonal Changes: Fluctuations in hormone levels, such as during puberty, pregnancy, or menopause, can impact skin health, leading to acne breakouts, hyperpigmentation, or changes in skin texture.
Top 10 Healthy Skin Habits:
I’m going to share 10 Skincare habits with you. If you follow these routines religiously your skin will start glowing like it used to do in your childhood.
1. Washing face before sleeping:
The most underrated skincare regime is washing your face before sleeping.
📌 I challenge you to wash your face before sleeping for the next 10 days.
All kinds of healing happen when we sleep. When you don’t wash your face, your skin’s entire effort is wasted in dealing with your dirty face.
So, make it a habit to wash your face every night before you sleep.
2. Water consumption
Right now you’re young and you overlook the importance of staying hydrated, but let me remind you, you’ll face severe problems in old age if you don’t fix this.
Always listen to your body’s demands and drink water.
Personally, I’ve found it helpful to set hourly reminders on my watch to ensure I stay hydrated. These reminders make me drink water.
Maintaining proper hydration levels can also have benefits for your skin.
3. Not touching your face:
The simple act of not touching your face can have a significant impact on the health and appearance of your skin.
If you challenge yourself to not touch your face for just a few days, you’ll likely notice a difference.
By not touching your face, you reduce the risk of transferring dirt, oils, and bacteria from your hands, which can contribute to clogged pores and breakouts.
Picking at pimples can lead to inflammation, infection, and scarring, prolonging the healing process and it can leave behind lasting marks on your skin.
4. Sunscreen:
The damage caused by the sun can be very hard to repair. Once sun damage occurs, reversing its effects becomes difficult.
UV radiation not only accelerates skin ageing, leading to fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven skin tone but also increases the risk of skin cancer.
So, apply sunscreen and if you play outdoor games then take extra protective measures like wearing scarves and hats.
5. Invest in good face washes:
Investing in a high-quality face wash is a crucial step in any skincare routine, but what exactly makes a face wash “good”?
This question doesn’t have a fixed answer. Factors like skin type, concerns, and personal preferences all play a role in determining the best face wash for you.
I’ve adopted a conscious approach of switching up my face wash each time I finish a bottle and luckily this works for me.
You can buy small bottles initially, test them and buy a big bottle only if it works for it. Or you can try DIY facewash, people are getting great results from them.
6. Natural Ingredients
In my school days, I struggled with pimples and tried countless chemical products and medications to treat them.
However, I found that these conventional treatments didn’t work for me, so I eventually gave up and started trying natural ingredients like tomato juice, aloe vera, yoghurt, and gram flour (besan).
Gradually, I started noticing significant improvements in my skin’s condition, complexion, and texture over time.
7. Fibrous And Water Rich Food
Fibre is essential for maintaining healthy digestion, which in turn can have a positive impact on your skin.
A clean gut can help reduce inflammation and promote clearer, healthier-looking skin. While water helps to keep you hydrated.
One easy way to ensure you’re getting enough fibre and staying hydrated is by incorporating fruits into your diet.
I always advise you to eat two fruits every day. This can bring magical benefits to your skin.
8. Minimal Chemicals On Your Face
Now, let’s talk about the products we use on our faces.
From our face wash and lotion to sheet masks and scrubs, they’re all made up of various chemical compounds.
Does this mean we should avoid using them altogether?
Not necessarily. Just like with medicines, moderation is the key. Use skincare products in appropriate amounts to maintain skin health.
However, when you’re looking to pamper your skin, turn to natural remedies. They will provide nourishment without unnecessary additives.
9. No Stress
Our skin is truly remarkable, acting as a reflection of our inner well-being. It’s almost as if it has a mind of its own. The connection between our minds and skin runs deep.
When we’re stressed, our bodies react, sometimes manifesting in skin issues like inflammation or breakouts.
These reactions remind us of the importance of maintaining inner calm, even during life’s challenges.
So, keep a check on yourself, control your thoughts and don’t take stress.
10. Exercising
Regular exercise is not only beneficial for your physical fitness but also for your skin’s health.
It took me a while to understand the impact physical fitness has on our skin.
The benefits of exercising extend beyond just improving muscle tone and cardiovascular health.
It helps to enhance blood circulation, which in turn delivers oxygen and vital nutrients to your skin cells, promoting a healthy complexion and a natural glow.
Moreover, exercise also assists in flushing out toxins through sweat, which can help prevent clogged pores and breakouts.
So, add regular physical activity to your routine and get vibrant, glowing skin.
