How To Treat And Prevent Hard Water Hair Damage?

Updated: May 20

Hard Water

Are you noticing a white coating around the taps of your house? Or your hair is becoming rougher with every passing day? Or is your hair fall is just not stopping?

Despite trying everything from taking care of food, hydration, proper sleep, and oiling. You even prepared seed mix and biotin ladoo.

And still, your hair problems remain the same. Well, I think the culprit is hard water. If hard water comes into your homes, then this article is all you need.

Table Of Contents:

Introduction

What is hard water?

Hard water contains high levels of calcium and magnesium salts, which not only leave stubborn residues on taps but also coat your hair and skin over time.

Neglecting this can lead to multiple problems like dryness, itchiness, dandruff, and even eczema or psoriasis.

How to Identify Hard Water?

Identifying hard water is relatively simple. Here are some common signs:

  • White Scale Buildup: One of the most noticeable signs of hard water is the accumulation of a white, chalky residue on surfaces like faucets, showerheads, and sinks. This buildup occurs when the minerals in hard water react with soap and form insoluble soap scum.

  • Soap Scum: Hard water doesn't lather well with soap or detergent. Instead, it forms a sticky scum that clings to surfaces, dishes, and clothes, making them feel less clean.

  • Dry Skin and Hair: Hard water can strip the skin and hair of natural oils, leading to dryness, itchiness, and sometimes even dandruff. Hair washed with hard water may feel coarse, dull, and difficult to manage.

  • Stiff Laundry: Clothes washed in hard water may feel stiff and scratchy due to the minerals deposited in the fabric fibres. Additionally, hard water can cause colours to fade more quickly.

  • Clogged Pipes and Appliances: Over time, the mineral deposits from hard water can accumulate inside pipes, water heaters, and appliances like dishwashers and washing machines, reducing their efficiency and lifespan.

But How Hard is Water?

Well, to check that you can use any tool available in the market.

So, now that you’ve identified hard water coming to your home, what should you do?

Well, the solution is simple. If you don’t clean your taps regularly, what will happen?

The coating will become very stiff and very difficult to clean. The same thing happens to your hair and skin. If you don’t clean them regularly a coating will form with time and no remedy will work on your hair and skin as it will not allow them to penetrate.

Let’s find out all the solutions we have.

Fixing The Hard Water:

This method will fix the root cause of the issue which is hard water. It will treat the hard water of your taps, remove calcium, magnesium and salts and make it soft.

While this option may be costly, but can be easily installed on your water sources and it will effectively remove all calcium, magnesium and salts.

If a whole-house softening system is not possible for you, you can consider installing filters specifically for your shower. These filters can efficiently soften the water used for bathing.

DIY Detox Methods

If you’re unable to install filters, I have some natural remedies for you, but like all-natural remedies and solutions, you’ve to do them religiously.

After every hair wash (and conditioning if you do), take 1-2 spoonfuls of apple cider vinegar, add 1-2 cups of water to it and rinse your hair with it. It will completely clean any deposition.

4: Lemon Rinse

You can also use lemon juice to effectively remove any deposition. Take 1-2 spoonfuls of lemon juice, add 1 cup of water and rinse your hair with it. (You don’t need that much dilution with lemon)

5: Weekly Deep Conditioning

To effectively fix the hard water issue, add a weekly deep conditioning hair mask to your routine. You can use a henna mask which not only softens hair but also acts as a protective barrier against future buildup.

The Middle Ground:

This solution is for those who don’t want to install filters and also don't want to do any remedies.

6: Clarifying Shampoo

You’ll have to find a good clarifying shampoo. Try it once every week. It will remove any residual deposits from hard water, ensuring your hair remains healthy and free from buildup.

More Solutions:

7: Protein Hair Mask

Protein hair mask helps your hair and scalp protect and fight against hard water deposition. So, if hard water is disturbing you, add a protein hair mask to your routine and strengthen hair and scalp from the inside to fight against any issues

8: Rice Water

This is the most important solution. While you’re cooking rice, add a little more water to it and use the extra oil for your hair and skin.

If you spray it as a toner or mask on your hair and let it be for 45 minutes, it will deposit protein into your hair and will provide nourishment and protection to your hair.

Yao women use this technique and we all know how strong and healthy their hair is.

Conclusion:

I really hope you are following at least one of these eight remedies and fixing your hair problem. You can definitely restore and maintain the health of your hair and skin.

P.S.: Don’t forget to come back and write a review based on your experience, and inspire others to try it too.
