In the hustle and bustle of daily life, we often neglect our skin’s needs, especially during the night.

In this article, we’ll try to understand the importance of a night skincare routine. I’m sharing the exact night skincare routine that I follow.

What is the importance of a night skincare routine?

Throughout the day, your skin faces various challenges and environmental stressors. However, the true magic of skin repair and rejuvenation happens at night. While you rest, your body initiates vital processes that promote growth, healing, and overall well-being.

Think back to those school lessons emphasizing the importance of a good night’s sleep for growth. If you’re focused on fitness, weight loss predominantly occurs during sleep. When your body is injured, the healing process peaks at night. Essentially, every rejuvenating process orchestrated by your body takes the spotlight while you sleep.

By establishing a strong night-time skincare routine, you empower your body to nourish your skin during these crucial hours.

But what’s the connection between sleep and skin rejuvenation?

I’m sure you’ve heard about beauty sleep. Well, it’s not just a catchy phrase but it’s a scientific truth. Quality sleep is a must for good skin health. When you sleep, your skin cells regenerate, collagen production is boosted, and the overall repair process is at its peak.

Imagine it as a nightly spa session for your skin, where it gets the chance to detoxify and replenish itself.

But here’s the catch – for this rejuvenation to be optimal, you need to lay the foundation with a thoughtful night skincare routine. Think of it as giving your skin the right tools and environment to thrive.

So, if you’ve been underestimating the power of a good night’s sleep, it’s time to rethink your bedtime habits and indulge in a skincare ritual that complements your skin’s natural rejuvenation process.

Let’s do all that needs to be done.

Now that we’ve established the science behind it, let’s talk about incorporating a night skincare routine into your daily habits.

You might be thinking, “Why should I bother? I just want to sleep.” Well, my dear friend, the truth is, that embracing a night skincare ritual doesn’t have to be a difficult task.

It’s not about adding more stress to your life; it’s about infusing a moment of self-care and love into your bedtime routine.

Think of it as a gentle and mindful way to say “thank you” to your skin for all it does throughout the day.

By taking a few extra minutes before bedtime, you are not only investing in your skin’s health but also nurturing a deeper connection with yourself. So, let’s dive into the delightful details of a night skincare ritual that will leave you waking up with a radiant, healthy glow.

Night Skincare Ritual

I’ve been following this exact night skincare routine for a long time and it’s giving me great results. But you don’t have to follow the exact routine. Mix and match and build your own ritual.

NOTE: It all seems a lot, but when you actually do it, it doesn’t take more than 5-10 minutes. Don’t trust my words, try it yourself.

Step 1: Brushing

I start my nightcare routine with an unexpected step –  brushing my teeth. Yes, you heard it right.

We all know the importance of brushing at night but brushing your teeth before starting a skincare routine is also important. It will prevent the potential issues with toothpaste interfering with your skincare products.

Finding toothpaste residue clinging to the corners of your mouth is irritating. So start your night skincare by cleaning your teeth to make sure your skin is ready for the next steps.

Step 2: Cleansing

The second step in my routine is cleansing. It is a crucial step that I never skip and you should also never skip it.

Even if you do not apply makeup and go for your regular skincare every morning, you still need to clean your face thoroughly before bed.

Throughout the day, your skin goes through harsh conditions. If you do not cleanse your face before bed, skin problems like acne can trouble you.

I recommend the use of micellar water for effective cleansing. A few drops of this charged water on a cotton pad will work wonders in removing the day’s residue.

If you don’t use micellar water and are uncomfortable with makeup remover, you can use coconut oil. Take a few drops, rub it between your palms to change the oil, and gently cleanse your face.

Step 3: Face washing

Now that my skin is prepped and cleansed, it’s time to remove any leftover dirt. Washing away the day’s oil and impurities makes me feel relaxed.

This immediate feeling of freshness sets the stage for the rejuvenation that follows during the night.

Sometimes I use chemical face wash but most of the time  I use my DIY face wash.

My face is a combination type so I use this face wash. You choose a face wash that suits your skin type.

Step 4: Scrubbing

Now this step is optional. I suggest using a scrub 1-2 times a week. It helps in removing dead skin cells. Make sure that you only scrub those areas that have dead skin cells.

Keep in mind – moderation is key. Over-scrubbing can do more harm than good, so be mindful of the frequency. Treat those areas that need extra attention, and your skin will thank you with a healthy, radiant glow.

Step 5: Toning

As we move on, let’s discuss toning. It is an underestimated part of night skincare.

Avoid using market-based toners at night, instead opt for the simplicity and purity of rose water. It has the power to fix your skin’s pH level and provide a natural environment for it to breathe.

Spray rose water and let it dry on its own, do not wipe it. Your skin should absorb rose water on its own.

You might not see the immediate difference, but with time I’m sure you’ll see the magic rose water holds.

Step 6: Moisturizing

Moisturizing is the heart of your night skincare routine. It presents you with the opportunity to pamper your skin with customized care.

Again I suggest not using market-based moisturizers and embracing the magic of DIY concoctions. Here’s a quick recipe.

Mix glycerine and rose water, store it in a container and use it as a moisturizer. (Check out the process in this video). This mix is so hydrating that the next day your skin will feel refreshed and supple.

Is you have extremely dry skin, take almond oil in your palms and pat it all over your face. Almond oil is a phenomenal moisturizer, but do not take too much of it.

Step 7: Eyebrows and lashes

Now that we’ve covered the essentials, let’s extend our care to the often-neglected eyebrows and lashes.

Take an empty mascara bottle and its wand (both cleaned and washed nicely) and add equal parts of castor and almond oil; mix the oils well.

Once you’re done with skincare, apply this mix to your eyebrows and lashes. Regular use of this oil will make your brows and lashes fuller and healthier.

Step 8: Lip moisturizing

Do not sideline lip moisturizing! Before going to bed, apply whichever lip care product you use.

Whether it’s your favourite lip balm, a dab of malai (cream), or a touch of ghee (clarified butter), make sure your lips are moisturized.

Switch it up based on your preferences or the season. Your lips will thank you with a soft, kissable texture that complements your glowing skin.

Step 9: Hand and Feet Care

The next thing you can do is take care of your hands and feet. Beyond the face, your hands and feet deserve attention.

It is not necessary to wait for cracked heels and dry hands to pay them a little attention!

You should apply hand cream each time you wash your hands to keep them moisturized.

Wash your feet before bed and moisturize them to avoid cracked heels.

Step 10: Mind Relaxation

Now, as we wind down our night skincare ritual, let’s focus on something that transcends the physical care – the relaxation of the mind.

Your skin reflects the state of your mind, and stress can manifest itself on your face.

Do not think about the worries of the next day. I know there are always a thousand things going on in our minds, but before bed, try to relax. So try to be stress-free before sleeping.

Reading is a such stress-free activity. It diverts the mind and calms the mind down. It will not only keep your skin healthy but also help you sleep soundly.

And the impact? Healthy, glowing skin.
