Many of us neglect our lips. Lips are delicate, and they go through the harshness of the environment daily. Ignoring hydration and other factors can lead to chapped lips, lips discolouration, and other issues.
While you can combat these problems by providing proper hydration and care, there are times when you forget about hydration and lip care (using a lip balm or chapstick).
What if I told you you can prepare a 100% natural lip balm at home? Yes, this is possible! Let me guide you to make a lip balm at home, in your kitchen.

Ingredients Required

-
Shea butter is rich in fatty acids (particularly oleic and stearic acids), which help lock in moisture and prevent your lips from becoming dry and chapped.
-
It is useful in harsh weather conditions or when your lips are dryness-prone.
-
Shea butter contains vitamins A and E, as well as antioxidants.
-
These components can help protect your lips from environmental damage, including UV radiation.
-
Vitamin E, in particular, can help repair damaged skin.
-
Shea butter has anti-inflammatory properties that can be soothing for irritated or inflamed lips.
-
If you have cracked or sore lips, shea butter can help calm and hydrate them.
-
Vitamin E oil can promote the repair of damaged skin.
-
If you have cracked lips or irritated, applying vitamin E oil may help soothe and heal the lips.
-
Vitamin E is an antioxidant, that is, it helps protect your lips from oxidative stress caused by free radicals and UV radiation.
-
This protection can help maintain the health and appearance of your lips.
-
Vitamin E oil has anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce redness and swelling, making it useful for soothing irritated or inflamed lips.
-
Glycerine is a humectant, which means it attracts and retains moisture.
-
When applied to the lips, it helps to draw in and lock in moisture, keeping your lips hydrated and preventing dryness and chapping.
-
It forms a protective barrier on the lips, which helps shield them from environmental factors like wind, cold, and pollution.
-
This barrier can prevent moisture loss and keep your lips soft and supple.
-
Glycerine has soothing properties and can help calm and alleviate irritation on the lips.
-
If your lips are dry, cracked, or inflamed, glycerine can provide relief.
4]. Beetroot Juice Or Powder:
-
Beetroot juice is high in water content, which can help hydrate your lips.
-
Proper hydration is essential for maintaining soft and healthy lips and preventing dryness and chapping.
-
Beetroot juice contains natural pigments called betalains, which can provide a temporary reddish or pinkish stain to your lips.
5]. Rosepetal Powder (If available):
-
Some people use rose petal powder to naturally enhance the colour of their lips.
-
It can impart a subtle pinkish tint to the lips, providing a natural and rosy look.
-
Rose petals are rich in antioxidants, which can help protect your lips from oxidative stress and free radical damage.
-
This protection can contribute to the overall health and appearance of your lips.
If the ingredients are not available, you can opt for the given substitution:
Shea Butter → Ghee or castor oil.
Vitamin E Oil → Almond oil (It contains vitamin E. It is why you can use it as a substitute.)
You cannot use petroleum jelly as a substitute. Petrol jelly, when exposed to the sun, oxidizes. It can lead to darkening of the lips.
Preparation:
Follow these steps to make the best lip balm in your kitchen.
For preparing the lip balm, you will use the double boiler method.
Double Boiler Method: This method involves using two nested pots, where the bottom pot contains simmering water, and the top one holds the food or substance you want to heat or cook. The indirect heat from the steam generated by the simmering water in the bottom pot gently and evenly heats the contents of the top vessels.
STEP 1:
Take a wide utensil (like a pot, pan, or wok). Prepare your double boiler set-up. You can take a wok and put a base on it.
The base utensil can be a coffee filter or any smaller vessel. That utensil will hold the utensil in which you will mix the ingredients.
Use a small glass jar for mixing the ingredients. Add water to the pan; just so much so that the bottom half of the smaller utensil submerges in water.
If you use a thick glass utensil, you can eliminate the base vessel. But make sure that the wider pan also has a thick base.
STEP 2: Let the water come to a boil. Now, start the mixing of ingredients.
STEP 3: Add half a spoon of shea butter to the glass jar.
STEP 4: Add half a spoon of vitamin E oil.
STEP 5: Add one-fourth spoonful of glycerine.
STEP 6: Add one spoonful of beetroot juice or powder.
STEP 7: Add rose petal powder (if available). You can make this powder at home if you have a rose plant. Dry some petals and turn them into powder.
STEP 8: Mix the ingredients and let them infuse for 10-15 mins.
STEP 9: Turn off the flame and let the boiling water settle.
STEP 10: Now strain the mix in a small container. Let the lip balm cool down and solidify.
Your homemade, 100% natural lip balm is ready for application! You can alter the ratio of ingredients according to the quantity you prepare.
